The Item Upgrader in World of Warcraft
The War Within introduced two gear upgrade currencies, Valorstones and Harbinger Crests. These can be traded at the item upgraders NPCs Cuzolth and Vaskarn.
Each item can be upgraded to its maximum level for a specific slot once. Upgrades to the slot are cheaper following. Additionally, the pity system introduced with The War Within lowers extreme upgrade luck variance.
Upgrades

The item will be awarded an upgrade to tier, which will guarantee that it will receive a certain amount of stats in the near future. This is a big reason why it's important to only upgrade your gear as high as you can, as once you reach the point where getting any more upgrades won't make a significant difference it's pointless.
